Many fashion companies use licensing for non-core products like accessories, leather goods, footwear, stationary, home wares, time pieces, headwear, fragrances and other line extensions. If you specialize in women's and men's fashion, could a licensee that specializes in children's clothing be a good expansion? How about bags or shoes? Jewellery? Watches? Perfumes?

We find that too often companies are tempted into a short term fix by potential licensees that look impressive but are not a good long term fit. It is best to spot this up front as it is far more difficult to change once a relationship is in full flow.

On occasion we have been invited to take licenses back from a failing partner and re-allocate them to a more suitable one. We are usually able to help the licensor in these cases. The challenge can be to find new licensees and to re-set the elements that went off track whilst maintaining product-to-market cycles. The "in-between licensees" period has to be carefully managed in order not to do damage to the brand.
